Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
